<p>Our shoulders are the key to our range of arm motion. They enable us to lift, throw, raise our arms, scratch our back, swing our arms, and more. We use them a lot! As a result, our shoulders are vulnerable to injury-and stress, age, and other factors contribute to these injuries, as well. The rotator cuff is the muscle in the shoulder and is the part most susceptible to injury. But you can strengthen your rotator cuff muscles with exercises to help safeguard against potential injuries.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t just jump right into exercising. Like any other exercise program, you need to develop the rotator cuff muscle with a purpose. You need to stretch, tone, train, and strengthen the muscle.</p>
<p>All exercises involving the rotator cuff have some very stringent ground rules which can prevent exercise related injuries.</p>
<p>Begin with the following exercises for the rotator cuff muscles.</p>
<p>Start With A Warm up</p>
<p>Stretching and warming up is an essential part of all exercises. The lack of a proper warm up can lead to sprains and other injuries. Arm circles are a simple exercise for this purpose. You can do twenty repetitions of these exercises in a set and a total of three sets.</p>
<p>* With your arms at your side, lift them slowly. * Bring your arms up over your head. * Lower your arms behind your back slowly. Then return to the original position. * Repeat for 20 reps per set.</p>
<p>There is also another way to do these exercises. You can simply lift your arms to your side and then move them in such a way that you make imaginary vertical circles. These exercises will warm you up, enhance your blood circulation and prepare you for the subsequent exercises.</p>
<p>Doing Rotations</p>
<p>Bring your arms up so they are at shoulder height, parallel to the surface on which you are standing. Then bend the forearms, making a right angle at your elbow. Begin to rotate your shoulders and rotator cuffs slowly. Complete 20 reps to make a set and do three sets. If desired, add weights gradually as you build your muscle strength.</p>
<p>Lateral raises</p>
<p>With your arms relaxed by your side, pick up a small hand weight in each hand. Keeping your arms straight, slowly raise your arm up and away from your side until your arm is parallel to the ground. Slowly lower your arm. Repeat for 12 reps on each side and do three sets altogether.</p>
<p>While these are not the only exercises that will strengthen the rotator cuff muscles and shoulders, these are some good ones to get you started. Remember to do a cool down for your muscles, too. Repeating the warm up exercises above is the perfect cool down routine.</p>

<p>Most of us lead stressful and jet setting lifestyles which seldom leave time for everything except work, sleeping and eating. When our bodies are young, then they bear the brunt of these unhealthy schedules without a murmur. However, with age there are certain parts of our body which become more vulnerable than the others. One of these is the rotator cuff which is situated in the shoulder.</p>
<p>The first sign of a rotator cuff injury is a throbbing pain in the upper arm which recurs periodically. Over time, this pain can become more severe. These symptoms are a sign that a serious rotator cuff injury is in the making &#8211; and the only way to prevent this is with rotator cuff exercises.</p>
<p>You can warm up by just stretching your arms and shoulders. Once you are through with stretching them, you can start by bending at the waist. Let your arms hang loose at your side. Shift your arms back and forth while keeping your shoulder and arm relaxed. These rotator cuff exercises need to be done gently and slowly.</p>
<p>The following are exercises which specifically target the rotator cuff. Each should be done for about 30 repetitions. These exercises can be performed with the addition of weights &#8211; just don&#8217;t use weights which are heavy enough to tire you out before you can complete 30 reps. If you&#8217;re using weights, start with small weights of around 2 oz and work your way up to heavier ones as you progress.</p>
<p>1. Lie face down on a bed or table, keeping your hands down and elbows bent at right angles. Raise your left arm to shoulder level, then your hand; all while maintaining a 90 degree bend in your elbow. Slowly return your hand to starting position and repeat 30 times before switching sides.</p>
<p>2. For this exercise you need to put a towel roll under your right armpit and lie on your right. Bend your elbow at a right angle and let your left arm remain at your side. Let the forearm rest palm down against your chest. Imitating the backhand swing motion in tennis, you need to raise your left forearm to the shoulder level by rolling your shoulder out. Repeat for about thirty times and then switch sides.</p>
<p>3. Lie on your right side, with your left arm at rest. Keep your right forearm on the bed or table, elbow bent 90 degrees. Raise your forearm up to your chest using a inward roll of the shoulders, much like a forehand tennis swing. Return your forearm to resting position. Repeat 30 times before switching to the other side.</p>
<p>These three rotator cuff exercises can be helpful in increasing the strength of your shoulder muscles and rotator cuff, helping you to avert rotator cuff injuries.</p>

<p>Tendon strain is a common injury that can occur from misuse, most often from a sports injury. For instance, the Achilles tendon that connects the anklebone to the calf muscles are most often injured by basketball players.</p>

<p>If you are not careful, overstretching the tendon with repetitive action, while putting excessive on the area can cause damage to the tendons and cause pain and swelling. For instance, a weightlifter may cause his or her injuries by neglecting the warning signs of pain, since the body sends painful warning when it is overworked and stressed and in need of rest and recuperation time. You can condition the body for tendon strain beforehand by doing stretching and strengthening exercises as do professional dancers.</p>
<p>When there is pain and the loss of motion, tendon injury or strain is easy to diagnose. However, further testing may be essential. These tests may include the use of an MRI, x-rays or ultrasound tests. For such a condition as physician may prescribe NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.</p>
<p>After healing from surgery, through care is essential. A surgeon may suggest the stretching and strengthening with a daily exercise regimen for the injured muscles. Most often, exercises are done while in warm water to help prevent re-injuring the area. Sometimes you may need to visit a physical therapist to help ensure the proper maneuvers of such exercises. <p>Also known as &#8220;calcified tendinitis&#8221; or &#8220;calcifying tendinitis,&#8221; calcific tendinitis happens when calcium deposits cause tendons to become inflamed. Most often, rotator cuff tendons are the target, and can occur in either or both shoulders.</p>
<p>The actual cause of calcific Tendinitis is still unknown. Several things have been ruled out as causes. Excess calcium in the diet has been ruled out; people who develop it do not have elevated calcium levels in their blood. If you are diagnosed with this condition, do not limit your calcium; that can put you at a risk for osteoporosis as your body cannibalizes the bones to make up the lack.</p>
<p>In a few cases, metabolic conditions have been fingered as the triggering cause for calcific Tendinitis. Sometimes kidney problems have also been indicated (or calcific Tendinitis has been seen as a symptom of kidney conditions, as the kidney is one of the major filters for calcium in the blood stream. Overuse of the shoulder doesn&#8217;t trigger calcific tendon either; it can cause rotator cuff wear and tear, but that&#8217;s not the same condition and calcium deposits are not present.</p>
<p>May be related to age</p>
<p>Some speculate that age, and the gradual ramping down of human growth hormone in the late 20s are one trigger for calcific Tendinitis, as it doesn&#8217;t happen to people under the age of 30, there may be Tendinitis from overuse injuries, but they usually don&#8217;t have calcium deposits.</p>
<p>Symptoms</p>
<p>Oftentimes, calcific tendinitis is asymptomatic, especially if the deposits themselves occur within the tendons deeply enough that they are not felt. In some cases, you may feel discomfort or pain if a large calcium deposit in your rotator cuff tendon causes so-called &#8220;shoulder impingement syndrome,&#8221; where you get some pain when you raise your arm overhead.</p>
<p>In addition, calcium crystals may shed off of the deposits and cause the tendons to become acutely inflamed. Oftentimes, people aren&#8217;t even aware they have calcific tendinitis until they experience this kind of attack. Surprisingly, though, this is also when the calcium deposits can be reabsorbed by the body.</p>
<p>Sudden onset</p>
<p>The usual time frame for onset is sudden; you move your shoulder and it hurts as if small bits of broken glass are nestled under your shoulderblade. Most times, the pain subsides after a week as the calcium gets reabsorbed.</p>
<p>If you visit your doctor during a bout of acute calcific Tendinitis, it can be seen on an X-ray. Most treatments are taking over the counter inflammation relievers and icing the shoulder or joint. Performing range of motion exercises to keep the shoulder limber is also recommended; it prevents the &#8216;locked shoulder&#8217; syndrome, and helps you avoid losing muscle mass.</p>
<p>For particularly severe pain, your doctor can give you a steroid or cortisone injection; in extreme cases, arthroscopic surgery can be recommended to break up the calcium nodule and extract it with a syringe.</p>

<p>Have you recently been diagnosed with calcific tendonitis and your wonder what it is? In simple terms, it means you suffer from a frozen shoulder caused by bone deposits. However, the reason anyone has bone deposits is something that have puzzled doctors for many years.</p>
<p>Occasionally it will be caused by immobility such as having to wear a cast for a long time due to other bones breaking. Others feel that it&#8217;s strictly caused by overuse, such as having to do &#8220;strongarm&#8221; cleaning or the carrying of a heavy purse, or simply caused by incorrect posture in walking or sitting. The majority of patients suffering from calcific tendonitis are females over 40 with diabetes.</p>
<p>You symptoms may have been discovered upon trying to reach a glass in a high kitchen cupboard, or merely by trying to dress yourself or brushing or combing your hair. The pain usually increases at night as you seek to rest. You will first feel some pain, in performing some overhead activity, but as each day passes the pain will increase, followed by totally losing the range of motion of your shoulder, perhaps entirely, prior to your seeking medical help.</p>
<p>Slow deliberate exercises may be recommendable for clearing up the pain and stiffness associated with calcific tendonitis. Depending upon the severity of the condition, range of motion may be regained at home while doing these particular exercises. However, these exercises may be necessary for many months to achieve the results you seek.</p>
<p>However, if your condition is more severe you may need to attend a supervised rehabilitation program with physical therapy sessions by a physical therapist to ensure that you properly perform the exercises. However, these exercises can cause pain and you will need to work through this pain to succeed. These exercises will help to increase your muscle strength and endurance. They will also help to increase your flexibility while you perform the various stretching exercises.</p>
<p>Resistance exercises are often recommendable, since they include the use of dumbbells or some rubber material to provide resistance for your shoulder as you use them. Pilates exercises often help to unfreeze a stiff shoulder.</p>
<p>Injections of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are commonly used to treat this condition along with physical therapy, if warranted. Because the accuracy of this kind of injection is vital, you may be asked to submit to a diagnostic ultrasonography. Friction massages are also common, as is using heat, ice or even additional ultrasound to treat calcific tendonitis.</p>
<p>If physical therapy intensifies the condition rather than helping, you may also need more than therapy. In which case, surgery may be warranted to help improve the condition. However, uncommon, most surgeries will include arthroscopically surgeries. This type of surgery uses cameras inserted into small opening in the skin of the shoulders. If you do need this type of surgery, you will also take on some rigorous therapy for an extended period.</p>
